Rebecca Sitton

First Grade learns the Rebecca Sitton priority list of "no excuse" high frequency spelling words. The emphasis is on correct spelling in everyday writing, not just for the end-of-the-week test.

First grade is responsible for the first 35 words listed in the chart below. In addition to the Sitton Core Spelling Units, additional words are included in our weekly word study assessments. Each word study list includes the groups of words which we hope most children will master by the end this year. Activities built around the spelling core words help students use prefixes, suffixes, roots, and word relationships to spell new words.

Here is a complete list of the Sitton Spelling Units for 1st Grade. The words in this word bank are listed in the order of their frequency of use in everyday writing. Since the is the most frequently used word in our language, its number is one in the word bank. The first 25 words are used in 33% of everyday writing, the first 100 words appear in 50% of everyday writing. Spelling words are not mastered until we see them spelled correctly in student writing.

The Sitton list (35 first grade words) are embedded into our "word study" learning lists. Check below this chart to see all the word study words we learn throughout each week including the 3 Core Words in the Sitton Spelling Units.
